Submitted on behalf of 11-year-old Alex Vetter, a 6th grade student at Hale Middle School, West Hills. This was boy's day out and we went fishing to Troutdale in Agoura. There are two ponds which are stocked with trout. When you arrive at Troutdale, 2468 Troutdale Drive, Agoura, each person is given a bamboo fishing pole with a hook, corn bait, and a bucket. They also hand you a sheet of rules. The most important rule is that no fish can be thrown back into the pond. By catching a fish, you agree to purchase that fish. Whatever you do, do not bring pets because it will scare off the fish. Another important rule is for adults to supervise their children at all times. It took me five minutes to catch my first fish, but he was so big he snapped the line. I had to go back to the front and get another hook. Then, my brother, Ian Vetter, caught a fish in 20 minutes by using the corn as bait. We also tried other baits such as cheese and worms. They liked the worms the best! It was a good experience to catch the fish, but challenging. Jay Vetter, my dad, encouraged us. "Do not give up. Keep trying to catch a fish, move around a little," he said. In total, we caught four fish, but my dad caught none. We found a good spot to do our fishing and we caught three of our fish there. The fourth fish was caught in the other pond. It took us about two hours to catch our fish. The biggest fish, which Ian caught, was 14-inches long! My biggest fish was 12-inches long. The owner of Troutdale said they stock the ponds with Rainbow Trout from fishing farms every two weeks. In that period of time, they sell 800 pounds of fish. Thousands of fish are caught in Troutdale each year. The business, which is family owned, has been located in Agoura for nearly 65 years. They are currently remodeling, but it should be completed in the next few months. A grandpa who was fishing near us, said he used to fish with his kids at Troutdale several decades ago, when they were little. Now, he goes fishing with his children and his grandchildren so three generations have fun fishing together. Price of admission is $7 per person on weekends and $5 per person on weekdays. Prices range from $1.50 for an 8 -inch fish up to $7 for a 12-inch fish and $10 for a whopping 15-inch fish. When you go to Troutdale, you will always have fun! To visit Troutdale, take the 101 freeway North, exit Kanan Road, take a left toward the beach, and a left on Troutdale Drive. For more information, www.AllYouCanFish.com. |
